Pattern Drenching and On-Demand Printing

Have you heard of pattern drenching? It’s an interior design trend that will add drama and excitement to your project. It takes the use of patterns to a whole new level, enveloping entire walls, ceilings, and even floors in a mesmerizing visual story. Pattern drenching can absolutely transform a space, and the rise of print-on-demand services makes it easier than ever to achieve this maximalist look in any project.

What is pattern drenching?

Pattern drenching is using patterns not as accents but by applying them to entire walls, ceilings, and even floors, creating a fully immersive experience. The key to this trend is to let patterns completely envelop a space. It layers shapes and hues in a way that transforms a room into a dynamic visual narrative.

Sometimes, this can mean saturating a room entirely in one pattern. In House Beautiful, interior designer Heather Peterson says of pattern drenching. “It’s counter-intuitive, but the more you have of a pattern the less busy it will feel; that small, square sample that feels intense and scary will calm down when you apply it to all four walls.” When a room is saturated with one pattern, it suddenly feels more monochromatic while still delivering a maximalist impact. Smaller, more intimate spaces such as powder rooms and bedrooms feel warm and cozy when drenched in pattern.

Another way to pattern drench is to cover a room in a few coordinating patterns. Perhaps a large-scale floral covers the walls and ceiling, with a bold stripe on the floor and furniture. No matter how it’s utilized, pattern drenching is about maximizing personal expression. Even clashing patterns can work in a room if the combination truly matches the person’s personality.

Why print on-demand?

With on-demand manufacturing becoming more accessible in interior design, it’s easier than ever to bring this idea into any space. Get started pattern drenching by choosing a pattern from the Design Pool library and work with your favorite printer to have it printed on wallcovering, upholstery, or flooring. Adjust the scale or color if needed and truly make these patterns perfect for whatever space you’re designing.
